Mercedes Benz CLA vs Mercedes Benz CLE

13 Mar 2026

Which luxury coupe is right for you?

Mercedes Benz offers a wide range of vehicles designed to meet different lifestyles, and two of their most stylish models are the Mercedes Benz CLA and the Mercedes Benz CLE. While both deliver premium design, advanced technology, and signature Mercedes-Benz driving refinement, they differ significantly in size, capability, and driving character.

Size and dimensions

The most obvious difference between the CLA and CLE is their physical design. The CLA is a compact four door coupe, making it easy to manoeuvre and practical for daily driving. It can measure up to 4.8 meters, depending on specification.
The CLE, however, is a larger two door luxury coupe, combining both the previous C Class and E Class coupes. It can stretch up to 4.9 meters giving it a more commanding presence and grand tourer proportions.

If you want compact sportiness and easier parking, the CLA suits you. If you would prefer a sleek, elegant coupe styling with a longer, more premium profile, the CLE is a good choice.

Seating and comfort

Both models offer high quality cabins, but they serve different purposes.
The CLA seats up to five 5 passengers, giving it an advantage for those who occasionally carry more people. Rear legroom remains competitive for its size, making it a comfortable journey for adults on shorter trips.

The CLE focuses on front seat luxury, offering four 4 seats with more generous headroom and legroom for the driver and front passenger. Its rear seats are more spacious than many coupes, but access is still naturally more limited than a four door like the CLA. This makes the CLE ideal for couples or individuals prioritising comfort over passenger capacity.

Performance and engine options

Both vehicles offer strong performance, but the CLE delivers more powerful options overall. If you're after exhilarating performance and six cylinder refinement, the CLE has the upper hand. However, the CLA still provides impressive power with a significantly lower price point.

Fuel efficiency

Efficiency is an important factor for everyday drivers.
The CLA leads in fuel economy, depending on the configuration, offering some of the most efficient engine options in its class while still delivering strong overall performance.

The CLE, due to its larger size and more powerful engine options, returns slightly lower figures, particularly in the six cylinder 450 and AMG models. The CLE 300 remains reasonably efficient, though still not as frugal as the CLA.
If fuel economy is your priority, the CLA is the more cost effective option.

Fuel economy is a significant factor for many everyday drivers, and the CLA and CLE take noticeably different directions in this area. The Mercedes Benz CLA remains the more economical choice overall. Our range of efficient petrol and hybrid engines delivers excellent mileage for a premium compact car, making it ideal for drivers who want strong performance without high running costs.

The all-electric CLA takes efficiency even further. Built on Mercedes Benz’s new electric platform, it promises exceptional range and ultra-low running costs, offering a compelling option for drivers ready to shift to fully electric mobility while still enjoying the CLA’s compact, sporty character.

Mercedes-Benz CLE, on the other hand, prioritises power and refinement. It’s larger size and more robust engine lineup naturally lead to higher fuel consumption - particularly in the six cylinder CLE 450 and AMG derivatives. The CLE 300 is reasonably efficient for its segment, but it still can’t match the CLA’s frugality.

In short: if fuel efficiency or lower day to day running costs are high on your priorities, the CLA stands out as the most cost effective option.

Driving experience

The two models deliver distinctly different personalities.
The CLA is agile, compact, and responsive, making it great for everyday driving. The lighter weight gives it a sporty, easy to handle feel. Whereas the CLE offers a smoother, more luxurious ride, designed for long distance trips.

If you prefer a luxurious grand tourer vibe, the CLE excels. For tighter, sportier urban driving, the CLA feels nimbler.

Conclusion

The Mercedes Benz CLA and CLE are both impressive luxury coupes, each tailored to different types of drivers.

The CLA suits those who want a stylish yet accessible option. Combining coupe inspired design with five seat practicality, strong efficiency, and spirited performance at a more affordable price point.

The CLE, meanwhile, delivers a more elevated driving experience. With greater power, a more refined and luxurious interior, and classic coupe proportions, it’s ideal for drivers who prioritise premium comfort and timeless elegance above all else.
