Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S 4MATIC Coupé Review

03 Apr 2024

The Mercedes-AMG GLE 63 S 4MATIC Coupé is sophisticated, stylish, and provides plenty of versatility for everyday commuting. Abundantly roomy and able to comfortably accommodate five, this coupé prioritises comfort without incurring any drawbacks to its design. Given its ample weight, the handling of this vehicle is delightfully silky as it glides effortlessly around tight bends. The GLE 63 S was designed for everyday living with the added benefit of refined architecture.

Introducing the Mercedes GLE 63 S

Mercedes-Benz has been designing the GLE range since 1997. The third and previous generation was produced between 2011 and 2019 with a multitude of variations and models over the years, the most recent having been the 2019 Mercedes-Benz AMG GLE 63 S 4MATIC Coupé, and featured a Twin Turbo Premium Unleaded V-8 Bi-Turbo engine which was capable of producing 577hp. In contrast, the new Mercedes GLE 63 S now can achieve 603hp due to its handcrafted AMG 4L V8 Bi-Turbo with hybrid assist, making it the most powerful GLE 63 S engine yet.

Upgrades to the GLE 63 S Coupé vs Previous Models

The 2023 GLE 63 S Coupé offers a deeper, sportier rear bumper as part of its dynamic, stylish design. Similarly, the flared wheel arches add further depth to the design as they float over the 22” alloy wheels. The AMG slatted grill adds a more assertive look to the front of the car, paired with a smarter, cleaner-looking lower front bumper. Power domes in the bonnet help to streamline and add structure to its curvature. Multi-beam LED headlights as standard offer better visibility (especially at night). Active air suspension as standard offers a cushioned drive allowing you to fully relax whilst driving in comparison to the standard GLE. The GLE 63 S Coupé sits 10mm lower to the ground when in ‘Sport’ setting. Adaptive dampers enable you to alter the experience of your drive and tailor it to your optimum level of comfort.

Performance

Defying its weighty chassis, the GLE 63 S Coupé is powered by a twin-turbocharged 4L V8 offering a gutsy 603hp (that’s 3.8 seconds from 0-60). With a top speed of 174mph, the GLE 63 S offers impressive speed and agility. The fully variable 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive provides grip on any surface. Paired with the Active Ride Control, suspension features offer active roll stabilisation for full control, even on hairpin turns. With nine gears and various driving programs, you can control the dynamics of your drive and tailor your experience to you.

Practicality

While its performance is the main focal point, it’s important to highlight that the GLE 63 S remains versatile, offering incredible practicality. With running boards as standard, entering and departing the car has never been so seamless. The boot space with the rear seats folded flat offers a roomy 1,790 litres. Even with the rear seats up, you still have 655 litres of luggage capacity. The load lip is suitably tall in comparison to the height of the floor of the boot space. Both the front and rear seats are spacious, allowing the whole family to be able to roam comfortably. If you have babies or toddlers, the GLE 63 S offers two Isofix points to ensure the safety of your family.

Technology

The GLE 63 S includes the new MBUX NGT 7 system. With the new multifunction sports steering wheel touch-sensitive capacitive buttons you can now use the full techwnological potential of the infotainment system more intuitively.

By either tapping or swiping you can experience the sound experience of the Burmester Surround Sound System as standard. The infotainment screen includes extra features not present on the standard model, such as Supersport mode which provides information about the engine and gearbox temperatures, power and torque, and for those individuals that are intrigued by the science, there is a G-meter which informs you of peak and mean acceleration, as well as the stopping time and measuring the distance of the stop. If you’re keen on the idea of visiting a race track to test its power, there is a Race Timer stopwatch to enable you to record your lap and sector times, features that Schumacher and Hamilton fans will delight in. With the Parking Pilot 360-degree camera, navigating tight spaces will be easy and detailed. The Bluetooth Interface allows for hands-free phone calls and music streaming to make your commute smooth and pleasurable.
