Laureus Sport for Good supports South West Surfing Charity
The Wave Project began in 2010 as a volunteer-led pilot scheme funded by the NHS. The project provided free one-one-one surfing lessons for young people in Cornwall who were in touch with mental health or social services, were socially isolated or at risk of social exclusion.
The resounding success of this trial on the attendees’ self-confidence, motivation and social skills propelled The Wave Project to become a charity that is now capable of working with up to 150 children per week across 20 locations throughout Cornwall, Scotland, Wales and the Isle of Wight.
Wave Project CEO, Joe Taylor, said “We are absolutely delighted to be supported by Mercedes-Benz and are extremely grateful for this generous donation.
“These funds will help us train more volunteer surf mentors to deliver free surf therapy for vulnerable young people.
“Last year we supported over 800 children and young people and helped them to be more resilient to challenges in their lives as well as improving their outlook and sense of self-belief.
“It is great that the value of this work has been recognised by Laureus Sport for Good Foundation and Mercedes-Benz.”
Vicky Lowe, Head of Development for Laureus Sport for Good, said “The Wave Project is having a deep impact on young people’s lives and truly demonstrates how the power of sport can be used. Thanks to our partnership with Mercedes-Benz UK, Laureus is able to support more than 20 projects in the UK that use a variety of sports to help young people overcome social issues. ”
