Frequently Asked Questions: New Cars

02 Aug 2023

Buying a new car is an exciting time for anyone, but it’s a bit of a different experience if you’re buying a brand new car as the first registered buyer. We’ve answered your frequently asked questions to ensure your car-buying experience is as smooth as possible.

When do new models come out?

Vehicle registration plates change twice a year, in March and September. New car models or facelifts can be released throughout the year at manufacturers’ discretion.

When does a new car need an MOT?

A new car needs its first MOT on the third anniversary of its registration. For example, a 73 Plate vehicle will be due its first MOT in September 2026. After this, a car needs an MOT test every year.

Do I need to ‘wear in’ my new car?

While new cars don’t need ‘wearing in’ in the same way as older cars once did, it’s advised to have a gentle ‘break in’ period for the first 1000 or so miles. Avoid hard breaking, aggressive gear shifts, driving at high speeds, and going above 4000 rpm.

However, electric vehicles require no ‘wearing in’ period, they’re good to go!

What is the first thing I should do when I get my new car?

Make sure your car is taxed and insured so that it’s legal for you to drive. Before you set off, ensure the vehicle’s service nook has bene stamped accordingly, and that the car is registered in your name. Spend some time getting to grips with the intricacies of the car, such as how different controls work, what different buttons are for, how to adjust the seats, etc. Finally, enjoy your new car!

Are petrol or diesel cars better?

This depends entirely on your driving habits and routines. Generally speaking, diesels are better for long distance journeys. Diesel is around 20% more efficient than petrol and is cheaper to run in the long term, but only for drivers doing long distance journeys or motorway driving. If you mainly use your car for city driving or small journeys, you’re better having a petrol vehicle. Of course, depending on your driving habits and the current move towards an electric future, an electric or hybrid vehicle may be better suited for you!
