Bike Trails in the South West
With sunnier days approaching, what better way to explore the South West than by loading up your car’s bike rack or the van with your bikes and heading out for a cycle?
There are a number of South West bike trails for a variety of abilities, and we’ve rounded up the best ones from national parks to coasts.
Exe Estuary - Exeter to Exmouth
Suitable for all skill levels, the Exe Estuary is the perfect trail for all the family, and allows you to explore the city, Exeter’s historic quay, and Exmouth’s coastline. This trail includes a ferry ride and a number of pubs to allow you to make the most of your exploration. The trail is also suitable for wheelchairs, pushchairs and mobility scooters.
Drake’s Trail - Plymouth to Tavistock loop
A bit higher up on the difficulty level, this Drake’s trail loop is a 41mile trail that incorporates breathtaking views of Britain’s Ocean City, Dartmoor, and stunning bridges. The trail is known to be muddy after the rain and the Shaugh Tunnel can be dark so you may need a torch. Make sure to pack a lunch and lots of water; this is definitely an all-day activity!
Burrator Reservoir and Princetown Old Railway
An intermediate trail for mountain bike lovers, this is one to add to your list. With stunning views of Dartmoor National Park, this is the perfect way to explore the landscape right on our doorstep. A picnic by Burrator reservoir is the perfect way to end this ride.
Taunton Canal and River Tone Trail - Taunton to Creech St Michael
Suitable for all skill levels, the Taunton Canal and River Tone Trail is an ideal route for families and relaxed riders. Starting in the heart of Taunton, the trail follows the historic Bridgwater and Taunton Canal and the River Tone, offering peaceful waterside views, wildlife, and a gentle escape from the town centre.
Coast to Coast - Cornwall Mineral Tramways
With mostly paved surfaces, this trail is suited for riders of all skill levels. Taking you from Portreath Harbour to Devoran, you’ll spot several landmarks along the way, including Carnon Viaduct. Don’t forget to pack your camera!
Weston‑super‑Mare Seafront Trail - Weston to Brean Down
Suitable for all skill levels, the Weston‑super‑Mare Seafront Trail is a relaxed, family‑friendly route that lets you explore the town’s iconic promenade, sandy beaches, and classic seaside attractions. The trail takes in highlights such as the Grand Pier, Marine Lake, and the village of Uphill, with stunning views across the Bristol Channel, before continuing towards the dramatic setting of Brean Down.
Haldon Forest - Loop of Ridge
This trail is just over five miles long and is one of the most stunning trails in the South West. Part of Haldon Forest’s infamous collection of bike trails, there’s so much to explore and many activities to take part in.
