Are you coasting towards higher repair bills?

Many drivers believe that coasting is a clever way to save fuel. Whether it's rolling downhill in neutral or holding the clutch pedal down to maintain momentum, coasting is a habit that has been passed down through generations of motorists.

But does it actually save fuel? And could it be costing you more in vehicle wear, repairs, and safety risks?

Let's take a closer look.

What Is coasting?

Coasting occurs when a vehicle travels without being in gear. In manual vehicles, this usually means:

  • Driving with the clutch pedal fully depressed
  • Selecting neutral while the vehicle is still moving

Short periods of coasting naturally occur during gear changes and when coming to a stop. However, some drivers deliberately coast for longer periods, believing it improves fuel economy.

In reality, modern vehicles tell a very different story.

Does coasting damage your car?

Contrary to popular belief, coasting is unlikely to cause significant damage to your engine or gearbox. However, it can increase wear on certain components, particularly in manual vehicles.

Increased clutch wear

When the clutch pedal is held down, the release bearing (also known as the throw-out bearing) remains engaged. This component is designed for short-term use during gear changes, not prolonged operation.

Continually holding the clutch down places unnecessary strain on the bearing, which can lead to premature wear. Should the bearing fail, replacing it often requires the clutch assembly to be removed, resulting in a more costly repair than many drivers expect.

Extra pressure on your brakes

The biggest impact of coasting is often felt by the braking system.

When a vehicle remains in gear, the engine helps slow the car naturally through a process known as engine braking. By coasting in neutral or with the clutch depressed, you eliminate this assistance and rely almost entirely on the footbrake to control speed.

Over time, this can:

  • Increase brake pad wear
  • Accelerate brake disc wear
  • Generate additional heat within the braking system
  • Lead to more frequent maintenance and replacement costs

Does coasting really save fuel?

For older vehicles, the answer may once have been yes.

For most modern petrol and diesel vehicles, the answer is usually no.

When a vehicle is coasting in neutral, the engine continues running at idle speed and still requires fuel to keep operating.

However, when you remain in gear and lift your foot completely off the accelerator, many modern engine management systems activate a fuel cut-off function. Because the wheels continue to drive the engine, little to no fuel is required during deceleration.

This means that on downhill stretches or when slowing gradually, staying in gear can often be more fuel-efficient than coasting.

So while coasting may feel economical, modern vehicle technology means it can actually have the opposite effect.

Is coasting dangerous?

The most important reason to avoid coasting is safety.

Maintaining full control of your vehicle is essential, particularly when road conditions change unexpectedly.

When coasting:

  • Engine braking is removed
  • Vehicle speed can increase more quickly downhill
  • Braking distances may increase
  • Steering and handling can feel less responsive
  • Selecting the correct gear quickly in an emergency can become more difficult

These factors reduce the driver's ability to react to hazards and can compromise overall vehicle control.

What does the highway code say?

The Highway Code specifically warns against coasting.

Rule 122 states:

"Coasting" describes a vehicle travelling in neutral or with the clutch pressed down. It can reduce driver control because:

  • Engine braking is eliminated
  • Vehicle speed downhill will increase quickly
  • Increased use of the footbrake can reduce its effectiveness
  • Steering response may be affected, particularly on bends and corners
  • It may be more difficult to select the appropriate gear when needed

While coasting is not itself illegal, it is considered poor driving practice and may result in faults during a driving test if it affects vehicle control.

The verdict

Although coasting may seem like an easy way to save fuel, modern vehicles are designed to operate most efficiently when left in gear. Coasting can increase clutch and brake wear, reduce vehicle control, and may use more fuel than drivers realise.

The next time you're tempted to roll downhill in neutral, remember that staying in gear is often the safer, more economical, and more mechanically sympathetic choice.
