Panel vans: Mercedes-Benz Citan vs Renault Kangoo

13 May 2025

When it comes to choosing a panel van, the Mercedes-Benz Citan and Renault Kangoo are two popular options that offer a range of features and capabilities. Both vans are designed to meet the needs of businesses and individuals who require reliable and efficient transportation solutions.

Drive:

Equipped with a 1.5L diesel engine, the Mercedes-Benz Citan works hard when needed but can also settle down to a quieter cruise on faster roads. The brakes are strong which is crucial due to the heavier loads you’re probably going to be carrying.

The Renault Kangoo is available as a petrol, diesel or fully electric version, depending on what suits you and your business or lifestyle. It offers both innovative technology and practical features, which could make it an ideal small van for small businesses.

Design

There’s not too much to say about the exterior design of the vans, a van is a van right? Both vans share a similar look, with the main distinction being the badge and the front grille. This means that the choice between the two will likely come down to the features and capabilities rather than what they look like on the outside.

The interior however is a whole other story. The seat covers in the Citan are the same as those in the Mercedes-Benz premium passenger cars, you get chrome applications around the air vents, and a premium leather steering wheel, giving it that luxury Mercedes-Benz finish.

The Renault Kangoo adopts a similar utilitarian design as the Citan, with it’s short bonnet and square lines. It retains a professional and subtle look on the interior, which has been adopted from the Clio supermini passenger car, including an easy link multimedia system with 8" screen and optional wireless charger. The design was a much needed update from its predecessor, but doesn’t quite reach the same luxury heights as the Citan.

Safety and Technology

The Citan is equipped with a range of modern safety and technology features. It includes Active Lane Keeping Assist, Active Brake Assist, Blind Spot Assist, and Speed Limit Assist. The van also features a 7-inch infotainment system with natural language voice control.

The Kangoo offers a suite of 20 advanced driver assistance systems, including Rear View Assist and a Rear-View Camera. It also features comprehensive airbag systems covering the front, lateral, and curtain areas, ensuring maximum safety for the driver and passengers, and of course the multimedia system with 8" screen we previously mentioned.

Practicality

The Mercedes-Benz Citan offers a single sliding door in the L1 and two rear doors that are capable of opening up to 180 degrees. There is also an option to add a second sliding door, although this comes at an extra cost.

The Renault Kangoo offers a range of practical equipment such as an overhead storage rack and some storage in the dashboard with a USB port, both available as standard. Additionally, there is an optional retractable interior rack with a load length of 2088mm and 2514mm, offering further flexibility for transporting goods.

Prices

Prices for the Mercedes-Benz Citan panel van start from £21,575 for the BASE trim and rise to £26,645 for the top of the range SELECT. The Renault Kangoo panel starts from £26,000 for the MWB or £28,880 for the LWB model, or a pricier £31,280 for the 5-seater Crew Van.
