Owning your dream Mercedes-Benz Van is now easier than ever: Here’s why

29 Jul 2025

Last month, the DVLA made changes to the Terms and Conditions of standard category B Driving Licences, the standard category for car drivers in the UK. So, if you’re considering upgrading your vehicle and need something bigger and/or more practical, now is the perfect time to purchase a Mercedes-Benz van.

With these changes, a standard category B UK Driving Licence holder can now drive:

  • -            Combustion engine vans weighing up to 3,500kg
  • -            Electric or Hydrogen-powered vans weighing up to 4,250kg

This adjustment is part of the government's push towards a greener and more sustainable future, as it means more drivers than ever can easily access commercial vehicles without holding additional licence categories.

How does this benefit me?

Before this adjustment, drivers looking to purchase commercial vehicles had to apply for additional training and Driving Licence certification, meaning additional time, expense and pressure. Thanks to the recent changes, a larger number of UK drivers can now access a wider range of business-ready vehicles with your standard UK issued Driving Licence.

Which Mercedes-Benz vans are covered in this update?

The great news is, almost the entire Mercedes-Benz van model range is now readily accessible, with the exception of certain Sprinter configurations, as the permissible weight of the vehicle cannot exceed the 3,500kg or 4,250kg limit.

However, these models are ready available for you:

  • -            Citan – Compact, agile and perfect for city deliveries or squeezing down those tight South West country roads
  • -            eCitan – a green panel van designed to maximise your day
  • -            Vito - Compact on the outside, packed full of features on the inside
  • -            eVito – fully electric and perfect for businesses looking for space and comfort
  • -            eSprinter – the electric counterpart of the legendary Mercedes-Benz van. A solid zero-emission choice for commercial and retail customers alike

How does this update benefit my business?

The recent DVLA update is great news for small business owners, tradespeople or even fleet managers who will no longer need to spend expenses and time acquiring additional driver training and certification.

Does this change only impact business customers?

This update benefits all UK Driving Licence holders looking to purchase a Mercedes-Benz van. That van conversion you’ve always dreamed of? Now you can reduce your renovation budget and avoid costly driver training, or time delays, with your standard issued UK Driving Licence. Of course, it’s important to double check that any modifications made to the vehicle doesn't exceed the maximum weight allowance of 3.500kg on a combustion engine van or 4,250kg on an electric or hydrogen-powered van.

Naturally, you will also need to obtain suitable road tax and insurance, to ensure you are fully covered to drive on UK road.
